The workshop “Illicit Drugs” will be delivered by Dr Gilbert Whitton, Clinical Director for Drug and Alcohol Services, Greater Southern Area Health Service (GSAHS), who is a highly respected addiction medicine specialist. Dr Whitton is also a Foundation Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine within the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. On top of breaking new ground with the first ANZCP workshop in Wagga Wagga, the workshop will also be streamed live via video conferencing to Albury and Griffith, giving paramedics, medical students and other frontline emergency staff from those regional areas the opportunity to access exceptional professional development opportunities without the need for hours of traveling. Further to this, ANZCP is currently looking into making professional development workshops available online as part of the new ANZCP website to be launched later this year. ANZCP has been busy videoing and editing a number of workshops from the past 18 months, which will be available as online content for members to access.
Now in its eighth year, the Network Ten-sponsored Pride of Australia Medal awards is an initiative of News Limited newspapers, including theSunday Mail, which aims to shine the spotlight on the unsung heroes whose extraordinary efforts often slip by unrecognised. The 2012 Pride of Australia award winners were recently announced and ACAPnsw member SCAT Paramedic Mick WILSON was posthumously awarded the heroism award for his actions during the Christmas Eve rescue which cost him his life. Details of the award are listed on the news limited websites, and include the following description: 2012 PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA MEDAL WINNERS HEROISM – MICHAEL WILSON ONE of the state’s most-skilled SCAT paramedics, Michael died on Christmas Eve during the rescue of an injured canyoner near Carrington Falls, south of Sydney. He was lowered into the canyon and secured the man in the basket before preparing himself and the man to be winched back to the helicopter. As they left the ground, Michael and the basket were thrown against the rocks violently. He placed himself between his patient and the rock wall, sustaining severe injuries. The man was lifted to safety but Michael could not be winched up. His line was cut and he died at the scene. ****************** A tribute night was held on 16th June 2012 with many of his colleagues, friends and family attending to raise money for the young family of Mick Wilson, who tragically died whilst performing a dangerous winch rescue on Christmas Eve 2011. The event was organised by friends and work colleagues of the well respected and much loved officer, to be “a feel good party and benefit night to celebrate the life of Mick Wilson SCAT Paramedic, and to help his family“. All proceeds raised at the event will go directly to his wife Kellie and their young children. The event was a raging success with the venue at capacity, a sellout months in advance. Hundreds of items were auctioned and raffled, raising thousands for the young family. It was announced at the event that ACAPnsw is working with the Wilson family to create a perpetual award that will be named in Mick’s honour, to be presented annually from 2013. ACAPnsw congratulates the organising committee on a very well organised event.

Our Extending Care on the Central Coast conference was an outstanding success. Held on Thursday 1 November at the Mantra Ettalong Beach, a great line up of presenters gave interesting and a varied range of topics that kept the crowd inspired throughout the day. A dinner was also held after the event and again a great time was had by all. Overall, great conference, great group of presenters and delegates, very suitable venue with a great spread of fine food and a great atmosphere! Our major sponsor for the event was ZOLL and other sponsors included Tynan Mackenzie, Smith & Nephew, Ferno, Laerdal and your Paramedic Shop. Additionally, our thanks to all presenters for giving not only their valuable time, but great presentations. Special thanks to Jeff Andrew who organised the ‘on the ground’ side of the concert and arranged all of our presenters. Such organisation of the high quality that was evident can’t be achieved without the support of those around you, and as such we thank Jeff’s wife Jo and their family for their assistance and patience whilst the conference was being organised and held. With the feed back we received throughout the day and from the survey forms completed, we have begun planning for the next conference to be held on the coast! These pictures are from the day and reflect the great time had by all!
