ANZCP (the College) is a Company limited by Guarantee that represents paramedics and those involved in the pre and out-of-hospital care, in the many forms it takes. We have, and we welcome members from all around Australia, and overseas. Currently, our College has members from every state and territory of Australia. We also have a number of international members.
On 27 October 2012 the members voted to change the formal name of the College from the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals (NSW Branch) Limited, (or ACAPnsw for short) to the Australian and New Zealand College of Paramedicine Limited, a name which better reflects who we represent and what the College does. We will be launching the new name, College image and website in 2013.
Our members include paramedics of all clinical levels, paramedics working in very different fields, including State Ambulance Services, mining fields, private providers covering many different events including large gatherings, sporting events and many other situations where the need for paramedic care is recognised. Paramedics of all clinical levels, doctors, nurses, emergency call centre and dispatch centre staff, paramedic academics, aeromedical paramedics, retrievalists, first responders, volunteers and of course those of the future, our student paramedics, are members of our College!
Our profession has changed immensely in the near 40 years since the College began. Our profession began in the late 1800′s, and has developed from “ambulance driving first aiders’‘ to a very skilled and highly qualified group of health care professionals recognised around the world. We work in many places we never thought possible, do many skills, and we touch the many lives of those we tend to and assist. Moreover, we are recognised as health professionals by the many other clinicians we work alongside. We work with doctors, nurses, specialists, volunteers, community first responders; we communicate with those who take the initial calls for our help, those in the many call and dispatch centres around the country. In addition to all of the above, there are those who assist us to gain the skills and knowledge we possess – the education and training staff who are there to support and further our knowledge, both within ambulance services and universities. Whilst the vast majority of our members are practicing emergency service paramedics, we are by no means exclusive to those paramedics working on the road, but inclusive of all who work in our field, such mine sites, construction sites, in the defence forces, offshore ventures, aeromedical and retrieval units and in many other paramedical roles. Our College, as mentioned previously, is non-jurisdictional with members joining from around Australia and overseas.
The College also operates our specialised store, called Paramedic Shop, selling textbooks and other paramedic specific merchandise both through its Rozelle shopfront and also online at www.paramedicshop.com.au
The most important people to the College are our members! You are the College! Our College provides many benefits to our members, including Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities, Scholarships and Grants to assist with furthering member education and research in the field of paramedicine, access to discounted work related resources through your Paramedic Shop and representation of the profession to employers, policy makers and politicians, media, related professional bodies and others from time to time.
